Kudzanai ChiuraiTriangular Commerce IV (Race), 2021

Artist and filmmaker Kudzanai Chiurai executed the ‘Triangular Commerce’ series during a residency at WhiteSpaceBlackBox in Switzerland. Chiurai’s work was also featured in ‘A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography’ at Tate Modern, curated by Osei Bonsu.
In this series of works on paper, Chiurai responds to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s text ‘Theses on Africa’, which reflects the philosopher’s attempt to rationalise slavery and the spread of capitalism through a Eurocentric lens. Drawing from this historical framework, Chiurai interrogates the enduring impact of such ideologies on present-day Zimbabwe. By rethinking the cultural and political realities of southern Africa, the series explores how postcolonial systems continue to shape educational institutions and cultural norms, revealing the lingering structures of power that persist beyond colonial rule.
