In Meaning and Landscape, Carrie Mae Weems presents a series of shadowy vignettes featuring silhouetted figures in nineteenth-century dress moving through an elegant interior, where scenes of servitude, courtship, domination, and polite tea rituals unfold. By obscuring the characters’ identities and race, Weems destabilises clear social categories and stages a dramatic reversal of power, exposing the hidden, intertwined histories of race, class, and desire embedded within grand domestic spaces and American society at large.
