Nolan Oswald DennisArticulated Globes, 2024

The ‘articulated globes (pair)’ are a new series of movable globe models, pushing the premise of the globe as an instrument rather than an ideal or “true” image of them. Instead we should think of the globe as a tool for thinking about and with the earth. These articulated globes are constrained by the geometry of their intersection and offer an image of the world as transformable but limited, always in tension with some preexisting condition.
This globe revisits a returning motif in these globe models, the double world, this is present in a model for theia, and many others. The weight of the double is poetically connected to Du Bois description of double consciousness, Fanon’s notion of a Manichaen world, and Mbembe’s writing about the ‘The Thing and its Doubles’
