Gabrielle Goliath at MOMENTA Biennale d’art contemporain in Montréal

Gabrielle Goliath draws on rituals, sonics, and social encounters to address histories and current conditions of differentially valued life. Her work troubles a racial/sexual regime of representation, promoting dialogue across difference through complicity, relation, and love.

Goliath presents 'Elegy – for two ancestors' at this year's MOMENTA Biennale d’art contemporain. Initiated in 2015, each Elegy performance gathers a group of seven opera singers who collectively enact a ritual of mourning, sustaining a single haunting tone over the course of an hour. Recalled in this sonic gesture are the lives of women and LGBTQIA+ individuals lost to a normative crisis of rape culture and femicide in South Africa and globally.
