The term " elegy " refers to a melancholy poem of mourning for a state of unhappiness of various origins, usually associated with the death or separation of a loved one. The mourning is personal, never anonymous.
Gabrielle Goliath 's Elegy is an act of collective remembrance, an invocation of the absent presence of women and LGBTQIA+ individuals raped and murdered in South Africa. Developed since 2015 and performed at several international institutions, Elegy is a long commemorative performance in which a group of seven female vocalists sustain the same note for an hour.
