Alfredo Jaar’s New Cape Town Show Explores Ideas Around Migration and Conflict
21 Apr 2024
Chilean-born artist Alfredo Jaar has been a significant presence in South Africa for over a decade, achieving local recognition alongside his international acclaim. His latest exhibition, ‘The Geometry of Solitude’, at Goodman Gallery in Cape Town, showcases his powerful approach to photography and the representation of humanitarian crises. Known for his work on the Rwandan genocide and global refugee issues, Jaar’s practice blends art and activism. He invokes Marxist Antonio Gramsci, whose activism and intellectual rabble-rousing culminated in prison.
‘The Geometry of Solitude’ features works that span from his exploration of the Rwandan genocide to his reflections on displaced people from Sudan, Afghanistan, and Vietnam.
