Memory is exuberantly crystallized in Franco-Algerian artist Zineb Sedira’s sculptures, films, collages, and cinematic installations. The rise of the post-liberation Algerian cinema in the 1960s and independence-related ephemera, as well as her own personal belongings and familial archive, establish the foundation of the narratives that meander between fiction and reality. Born outside of Paris to Algerian parents, Sedira weaves collective traumas and the resilience of a colonized and liberated identity with internalised experiences of an artist fascinated by film, objects, and stories.
In Sedira’s current exhibition, 'Let the drums beat!', at South African Goodman Gallery’s New York outpost, a multimedia selection presents a taste of her most recent work, including an interpretation of her 2022 Venice Biennale exhibition for the French Pavilion, a short film called 'Dreams Have No Title', which brought the London-based artist the special mention Golden Lion Prize.
