Walter Oltmann’s exhibition ‘Metamorphosis’ at the Norval Foundation offers an insightful exploration of one of South Africa's foremost sculptors. Known for his expertise in wire sculpting, Oltmann creates anthropomorphised, insect-like figures that evoke themes of transformation and ecological reflection. Drawing from his extensive body of work produced during a residency at NIROX Sculpture Park, Metamorphosis’ features a range of colourful and disturbing, yet beguiling, imaginary figures.
The exhibition looks out through plate glass walls on the Norval Foundation's sculpture garden, which emphasizes the interconnection between Oltmann’s work and the larger natural ecosystem. His life-sized, alien-like figures are placed on varying scales and plinths invite viewers to engage with the works from different perspectives—some from elevated vantage points and others up close.
Curated by Karel Nel and Ally Martinez, the exhibition highlights Oltmann’s mastery of his medium, as well as the playful ambiguity that characterizes his work. Through his innovative sculptures, Oltmann challenges the viewer to consider the changing natural world and our complex relationship with it.
