"This, the second edition of On The Mines, retains the same chapters as the first but departs from it in design and in some of the content. The intention in making the changes has been to expand the view but not to alter the sense of things. Thirty one photographs have been added and eleven removed. All of the "new" photographs are part of the same work that inhabited the first edition. Photographically I have made no attempt to update the content of the book. However there is, in About the Mines, a brief description of some developments in gold mining in South Africa since the closure of the old Witwatersrand gold mines." David Goldblatt
