Mateo LópezBold (Dice), 2019
Two handmade leather balls with ink drawing
Work: 22.1 x 22.1 x 22.1 cm

In Bold (Dice) (2019), Mateo López explores the collapse of function through two hand-stitched leather balls that resemble dice yet resist their intended use. By transferring the form of dice to spherical objects as opposed to their traditional cubes, he transforms a tool of chance into a sculptural form devoid of utility. This gesture aligns with López’s broader practice of challenging functionality, in which objects serve as vessels for thought rather than action, inviting reflection on the boundaries between design, play, and conceptual intent.
