David Goldblatt’s retrospective ‘No Ulterior Motive’ makes its final stop at Yale University Art Gallery following presentations at The Art Institute of Chicago in 2023 and Fundación MAPFRE in 2024.
Spanning the South African photographer’s seven decade career, the exhibition includes work from the 1950s to the 2010s, demonstrating Goldblatt’s commitment to showing the realities of daily life in his country. The exhibition and accompanying publication bring together roughly 150 works by Goldblatt from the collections of the Yale University Art Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago—two major Goldblatt repositories. The exhibition not only includes his early black and white photography but also his post-apartheid colour images, detailing the breadth of his photographic overview of South African history.
Accompanying the exhibition is a public programme featuring lectures, discussions and a screening of 'Goldblatt: A Documentary', offering multiple opportunities to engage with his work.
