Hank Willis Thomas, on Zigzags by Zoé Schreiber
American artist Hank Willis Thomas (1976–) is interested in how perspective and point of view influence identity, self-perception, and the perception of others. His multifaceted works (photographs, sculptures, installations, videos…) question stereotypes, the weight of representations that permeate popular culture, and the underlying narratives they convey. His conceptual practice highlights the inequalities that weaken American society and fuel divisions. He plays with framing and mirror or reflective effects to reveal the details at the margins of the image and the blind spots of History. “The person who frames the image determines what we see (…) More is happening outside the viewfinder of a camera than inside it.”
