KM21 is proud to present the first museum solo exhibition in Europe by artist Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum (Botswana, 1980). In addition to an overview of recent drawings and paintings that have never before been shown in the Netherlands, Sunstrum is making a site-specific installation in KM21 around two large new paintings.
She combines these with historical pieces of furniture from Kunstmuseum Den Haag's extensive collection of applied art in a special interplay between contemporary art and cultural heritage.
In her drawings, paintings, installations and animations, Sunstrum refers to mythology, ethnography, ecology and quantum physics, among other things. With influences from literature, cinema, theatre and other forms of storytelling, Sunstrum is building a constantly growing story. Through a shadowy 'cast' of characters and alter egos, she explores elusive but universal thoughts about being yourself and belonging; the feeling of belonging somewhere. Sunstrum places these figures in indefinable environments that feel both archaic and futuristic.
